- To compete effectively in global markets, we must modernize our facilities, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and develop stable, cost-effective energy sources. That is why we are investing approximately 2 billion PLN in the transformation of our most energy-intensive soda business. With the signing of this agreement, we are launching one of the pillars of this transformation – the conversion of the boiler to biomass. Through a competitive bidding process, we selected a consortium that combines experience in managing large-scale industrial projects with specialized expertise in energy technologies to carry out the project. Thanks to this investment, we will reduce coal consumption by 100,000 metric tons per year – that’s approximately 1,500 railcars full of coal that will not end up in our boiler each year. Combined with the waste-to-energy plant, the project will create a new energy foundation for the Inowrocław facility, reducing emissions and strengthening the competitiveness of production for years to come, says Kamil Majczak, CEO of the QEMETICA Group.
The project titled “Conversion of a Coal-Fired Boiler to a Biomass-Fired Boiler, Including a Biomass Fuel Management System” received funding in the form of a grant from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) allocated from the Modernization Fund. The project involves converting the coal-fired boiler operating at the plant’s combined heat and power plant into a boiler fueled 100% by biomass. Its primary fuel will be wood chips. The modernized boiler will produce steam for the plant in Inowrocław.
A consortium consisting of Mostostal Zabrze Realizacje Przemysłowe S.A. and SFW will be responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the facility. The boiler is scheduled to be commissioned within 24 months of the contract signing.
An integral part of the project is the construction of a complete infrastructure for receiving, storing, and transporting biomass. Among other things, unloading stations for trucks and railcars, facilities for separating metals and oversized components, feeders, storage silos, and an overhead conveyor transporting fuel to the boiler will be built. The entire facility will be equipped with appropriate fire and explosion protection systems.
- We are pleased to begin the project to convert a coal-fired boiler into a biomass-fired boiler, which is a key element of the energy transition in Polish industry. We thank QEMETICA for the trust it has placed in our consortium by entrusting us with the implementation of such an important investment. For MZRP, this confirms that our extensive experience in executing complex energy projects enables us to effectively support clients in achieving their ambitious goals related to transformation and sustainable development. We are also pleased to be collaborating with SFW, which brings to the project proven technology based on experience from numerous projects around the world. We believe that combining our expertise will enable us to successfully complete this investment and lay a solid foundation for future joint ventures, said Marcin Grzanka, President of the Management Board of MZRP S.A.
- Combining SFW’s expertise in decarbonization technologies with Mostostal Zabrze Group’s construction experience enables us to support QEMETICA in meeting its sustainability targets and reducing its environmental footprint. We are proud to contribute to this important project and to support QEMETICA on its journey toward a more sustainable future, noted Mats Ohls, Senior Vice President, Global Services at SFW.
